MP&N RR - Manure Pile & Naked Railroad
Welcome to Mike McLaughlin's MP&N Railroad aptly named for a
layout on a horse farm. This panoramic view is from last year.
There have since been improvements. You can see an LGB MTS mouse
in the mailbox. Currently the railroad is controlled by an 8 Amp
Digitrax Chief. The transformer and chif are in the house with
the loconet running out to a UP3 panel in the mailbox. The Trains
are stored in the crawl space and come out via a hinged and
latched door in the crawl space window located just behind the RR
crossing signpost above.

The layout was done using Railroad Track Lite V2.5 and stayed
fairly true to the design with slight changes for the real world.
. In the beginning there was
little more than track laid in a manure pile.
The manure pile increased to two
levels. the bottom being ballested in screenings.
Then tunnels were
constructed of pressure treated wood. I tried to use 10"
drainpipe but had a hard time maintaining the curve.
A recirculating waterfall was added
and the upper level ballasted.
The trains ran all last
summer, but the only vegitation was weeds or it was naked when I
used weed killer.
Powered by the LGB
Multi-Train System, two locos could be run for short periods.
Passing of the euro-steam
and modern caboose, we are not concerned with a real time period.
Snow falls on the garden railroad.
and it snowed and snowed
and snowed, operation was shut down when the rails were under 2
feet of snow for most of the winter.

A new Aristo FA and
B unit pull streamline coaches.
A truss bridge was
constructed by cheating. I used a scroll saw to carve it out of a
solid piece of cedar.
A Grist Mill was
purchased on EBay and a cliff and water trough were added to
power the mill.
"People"
were added to the station.
"Aerial"
view of farm, check out the windmill, also courtesy of EBay.
A scratch-built trestle was added and you can even see some foliage.
Future expansion
of railroad planned for this summer.
Stay tuned..... there is new rolling stock, more structures and maybe even some kind of gardening to come.
